2026 Goals and Memories – Adventures in a Messy Life

This past year I spent three months updating my blog. One of the things I did was go through and delete a lot of posts, over 200 posts, and consolidate many of them down into a single post for each year for my memories.
In the process I learned I really liked the years that I started off writing what I wanted to achieve for the year and what my goals were. Even if I didn’t achieve them.
Spoiler. I almost never achieved them.
But, it was interesting to see what I wanted to try each year.
Also, as I was organizing my blog, it gave me a place to put all those memories for the year.
Not that this is playing any reason in why I’m doing that this year….

But let’s look back at how I did on some of the things I wanted to do last year
Organization
Last year, I wanted to get the house organized. In the process, I realized it was way more work than I realized.
In reality, when five people live in the same house for 20 years, and you homeschool for all that time, it will gather a lot of stuff.
For the last several months, I have been bringing boxes of books to give away.
BOXES
And it’s been hard. So very hard to give all those books away.
But, I’ve also had to stop and realize that I am holding on to them not because I plan to ever read them again, but because I like having them. I do not plan to read the Black Stallion collection again, but someone in my co-op with a 10-year-old girl might.
So, I gave it to them. Then, if there were any left after they went through the,m I took it down to Salvation Army.
All told, I’ve probably taken 50 boxes of books and various other items to giveaway.
I’ve also painted one room, and lots of trim in different places.

Organization goals for 2026
- Replace carpets upstairs, to do this, I need to finish painting rooms and trim
- Finish organizing upstairs, I think this may get done by June, hopefully
Realistically, I think we could have the house ready to be on the market in about a year? Maybe? It’s a lot of work and a lot of painting and repairing.
Reading Goals
In 2024 I suddenly saw everyone sharing their Year in Books from Goodreads, and I hadn’t really made any real attempt to track my books there, and so according to Goodreads in 2024 I read 24 books.
This year, I worked harder to track that, and I still know I forgot several books. Like I just remembered another I forgot to put on there, and it was like a 1000 page book (a Stormlight book). So, it said I read 94 books I think (I’ll put the image in here with facts).
I noticed I’ve gotten rather lazy in my reading, and I want to next year read some more “serious books.”

Reading goals for 2026
- Read 1 nonfiction/classic/theology book a month
- City of God, St. Augustine
- On the Incarnation, Athanasius
- The Odyssey- I’ve started it a couple of times, but got distracted
- I’m trying to brainstorm more books, so I’d love more suggestions
- Continue with the book quests at Lorehaven, come join me
- Continue reviewing one book a month at Lorehaven
Writing Goals
In my head, when the kids graduated and were out of the house, I would get all of this writing done. I think the reality was I filled that time with all sorts of other stuff, and my brain just needed time to decompress.
So, I got very little done.
I’m going to combine several different things into one, as some of these are related to blogging, and some of these are just stuff I want to get done.
2026 Writing Goals
- write an Ephesians Study, this is my fun to play through right now in my personal Bible study
- Brite timeline, this is my big plans for a visual for Sunday School
- Sunday School units- I plan for these to look like several different ones I have made previously, my plan is to alternate between Old and New Testament
- Easter
- baby Moses
- Christmas
- Armor of God (yes that is two New Testament)
- David and Goliath
- History Units- I want to actually get the first of my history units done and finalized
This is a big long list, and more than I will probably do, but it lets me feel like I have a nice set of goals for the year in several different areas.
Sewing Goals
Last year I sewed several random things.
In July, I bought the Lutterloh Sewing system, and I’m having fun experimenting with that and figuring out how to make that work and sew fun outfits with that.
I want to ultimately have over half of my clothes things I have made. That will be a long-term goal.

Sewing Goals 2026
- Sew one big item each month, that is identified as either a garment or something that is at least a yard of fabric
- Sew one small quilt square a month, maybe more. I joined a quilt square a week group and have all the patterns, and it would be fun to go back and get those done.
Okay, that’s my goals. At the end of the year I’ll be adding in one week of memories to add how my year was in.
