“Fancy Dress” Mother’s Day Card for Kids To Make

If the kids are looking for a fun homemade card to make for Mom this weekend, give our “Fancy Dress” Mother’s Day Card a try. Made with textured paper so the design really pops, this card is fun to make, but quick and easy, so it’s perfect for last-minute Mother’s Day crafting.

We’re on a roll making Mother’s Day cards here in my daycare this week. Did you see the adorable Tie Dye Dress card we made the other day? Check it out if you didn’t. It’s super-cute!

A Mother’s Day Card Made with Wallpaper Samples

Because the kids had so much fun with that craft, I thought they’d enjoy making more dress cards today. But today, we’re making our dresses “fancy”.

We’ve used the same template to trace the dresses for today’s Mother’s Day card (you can print it off here), but we’ve cut our dresses out of textured wallpaper samples with fancy patterns which make our dresses look more formal than they did yesterday.

Where to get wallpaper samples for kids crafts

When you’re crafting with kids, wallpaper samples are a great alternative to scrapbook paper. Scrapbook paper can be expensive, but you can get entire books of wallpaper samples for free from your local paint and wallpaper store.

Click here for kid-made Mother’s Day gift ideas.

These books become outdated after a few years, and the store owners are usually happy to give them away, so pop in to your local shop and ask if you can take a few off their hands.

I love the wallpaper book that we’ve taken our paper from today. Every page in the book is white, but because the paper is textured, it’s fun to colour. The designs really stand out when you go over them with markers, crayons or watercolours.

Of course, if you don’t have wallpaper samples, you can cut your dresses out of any kind of paper that the kids can colour and decorate.

To make our “Fancy Dress” Mother’s Day Card, you’ll need:

  • textured wallpaper samples
  • card stock
  • scissors
  • markers (we used Crayola washable markers)
  • Sharpies (for writing on our cards)
  • glue
  • ribbon
  • buttons
  • our printable dress template

Print your dress template

If you’re using our template to make your dresses, print it off here. Then, have your kids cut out the dresses in the template and trace them onto the backside of their paper.

Next, they can cut out their dresses.

If you have older kids, they’ll be able to do this without any assistance, but if you’re working with preschoolers, they may need a hand.

Don’t aim for perfection when crafting with kids

Let them try to cut it out on their own before assuming they’ll need help. If the dress isn’t cut out perfectly, that’s ok. A child will feel much more proud of their craft if it’s their own work, even if it looks a little wonky.

And honestly, it’s going to be way more charming if it is a little wonky.

Once they get their dresses cut out, the kids can colour and decorate them.

If you’re using patterned wallpaper samples like we were, this is where things get really fun.

Those designs really start to jump out as the colour is added.

Assemble and embellish

Fold a piece of cardstock in half, and have the kids glue their dresses to the front of the card.

Then, they can add buttons and bows to their dresses.

You can also use sequins and craft jewels to add some bling to the dresses if you want to make them extra fancy.

When the dresses are decorated, the kids can write their Mother’s Day messages in their cards.
