Easy Yarn Poppy Craft for Remembrance Day
This yarn poppy craft is relaxing and quite therapeutic. It’s a lovely activity to do while you and your and children or students reflect about the meaning of Remembrance Day.
Rememberance Day is approaching (November 11th), so the toddlers and preschoolers in my daycare have been busy making more poppy crafts. I got the idea to make yarn poppies for Remembrance Day when we made this paper plate yarn art craft several months ago. Remembrance Day had long passed, so I saved the idea to share with you for Remembrance Day this year.
I find yarn winding to be very relaxing. Making this poppy craft does take some advanced fine-motor skills though, so these it’s probably best to do with kids 5 and up.
To make our yarn poppy craft, you’ll need:
- paper plate
- white glue
- paint brush
- yarn: green, black and several shades of red
Making your poppy:
Some kids may find it easiest to work with lengths of yarn that have been cut from the ball, while others may prefer to work straight from the ball of yarn, cutting when they want to switch colours.
You’ll want to start in the center of your paper plate.
Begin by squeezing a bit of glue onto the center of the plate. Use a paint brush to spread it around.
Then, starting with green, wind the yarn in a circular pattern, pressing it into the glue as you work, forming the very middle of the poppy.
Next up is the black yarn. Wind it around a few times, and then switch to your red yarn.
Again, apply a little more glue. You don’t want to spread the glue out too far. It can make things messy, and may even start to dry before you get to it. Just glue as you go, applying only what you need for a few rounds.
It may be handy to keep a damp wash cloth nearby as fingers tend to get sticky making this craft.
If you have more than one shade of red yarn, have the children switch up the reds every now and then as they work. The varying shades will add depth and dimension to their poppies.
Continue winding the red yarn around and around until you get to the outer-most edge of the plate.
So pretty!
