Paper Plate Quilt Craft – Happy Hooligans

Here’s a fun and easy quilt craft for preschool or kindergarten that’s perfect you need a craft for the letter Q.

Toddlers and preschoolers can explore colours, patterns, textures and textiles with our paper plate quilt craft. It’s the most recent addition to our A-to-Z collection of paper plate crafts.

I’ve just always had an affection for fabric. I loved pouring over my Great Grandma’s quilts and examining all the colours and patterns in the quilt squares. I took up sewing in my teenage years, and as an adult, I’ve made over 100 baby quilts for friends, co-workers and neighbours.  I LOVE fabric.  It’s like candy for my eyes and food for my soul. Yum!

Because I can’t bear to part with my scraps, I have a huge bin fabric which we use often when we’re crafting.

I’ve been just waiting for us to reach the letter Q with our paper plate crafts because I’ve had this cute little quilt activity in mind for a while now.

Learning through exploration

While the kids were selecting the fabrics for their quilts, we discussed the fabrics that would look best in our quilts. We used words like dark, light, contrasting and complimentary when we were describing the colours and patterns. We also talked about the thickness and the weight of the fabrics.  We compared corduroy and fleece to cotton and flannel.  And of course, we examined the patterns: bugs, animals, polka-dots, flowers, hearts and stars on the different fabric swatches. There was so much too see and explore.

Making our Preschool Quilt Craft

When the kids had collected their favourite pieces of material, I cut them up into 1 inch squares.

Then I marked out a grid of 16 squares on each paper plate.

The hooligans then matched their fabric squares up with the squares on the plate, and glued them all in place.

Because a quilt typically has a border, they added a strip of paint around the edge of their paper plate to complete the craft.
