Homemade Votive Candle Holders – Happy Hooligans

Homemade votive candle holders for Valentines Day – an easy homemade Valentines craft for preschoolers to make and give.

We love crafting for Valentine’s Day here in my home daycare.   The hooligans love making something special to give their moms and dads for Valentine’s day, and we just love being surrounded by all the red and pink crafts supplies as we craft our way to Valentine’s day.

If you’re looking for a sweet gift for your little one to make for Valentine’s Day, these Valentine’s Votives are easy to make, and the supply list is very basic.

Supplies:

  • glass jar
  • Mod Podge (or white glue, slightly watered down)
  • paint brushes (sponge brushes work well)
  • tissue paper cut/torn into 1 inch squares

If you’re using Mod Podge, you can get started right away. If you’re using white glue, you’ll first need to mix a little water into it.  Not a lot.  Just enough to make it a bit thinner and runnier than it usually is.

How to make our Valentines Votives:

The hooligans started by coating their jars with a layer of glue.  We used sponge brushes for this.  They’re great for soaking up and spreading the glue around, but I’m sure a regular paintbrush would be just fine.

Once their jars were covered in glue, the girls pressed squares of tissue paper into the glue covering their jars until they were satisfied with their project.

Don’t worry if the tissue paper  is wrinkled or even if it gets torn.  Imperfections add character, and these votives will look beautiful no matter how the tissue paper is applied.

You may have to help really young ones with this final step:  With a little glue on the brush, gently tap down any pieces of tissue paper that are sticking out from the glass.  This puts a final coat on the jar as well, sealing everything, and adding some shine.

We set our jars on a cookie rack to dry, and after a couple of hours, we popped a tea light into each of them, and tried them out!
