Popsicle Stick Snowflakes for Toddlers

Simple Popsicle Stick Snowflakes: an easy Christmas craft for toddlers and preschoolers to make for the Christmas tree.
Oh, I do love making simple Christmas ornaments with the toddlers and pre-schoolers in my home daycare at this time of year!

The hooligans love making snowflakes, and this is one of our easier snowflake crafts, and perfect for very young children.
Because this is a snowflake craft for preschoolers, I’ve kept the supply list to a minimum, but the process is creative and let’s the kids explore a variety of techniques and materials.

The kids can hang these snowflakes on the Christmas tree, or display them in a window for a pretty winter scene.

To make our popsicle stick snowflakes, you’ll need:

- popsicle sticks (also known as wooden craft sticks)
- coloured paint
- white paint
- glue gun
- thread for hanging
To make our snowflakes, we started by painting the popsicle sticks. It was mild enough that we could craft outside today!

You can use acrylic craft paints – we usually do, but today we’re using THESE AWESOME washable paints by Crayola. I love, love, love them! They clean up so well, and the colours are lovely.

While the sticks were drying, we worked on our other Christmas craft of the day: our plastic icicles. They are SO awesome, and so, so easy.

Once our popsicle sticks were dry, I quickly stuck them together using a glue gun. You could use kids’ glue but I wasn’t sure how long they would hold up that way.

We used a toothbrush dipped in white paint, and scrubbed the toothbrush across the tines of a fork to splatter our painted snowflakes.
The children really enjoyed this technique, and I think the splatters really make our snowflakes look like they’re dusted with frost or snow.

To finish, attach a loop of string or thread, and you’re ready to hang your snowflakes on the Christmas tree.
These snowflakes make a sweet gift for toddlers and preschoolers to make for parents or grandparents. You can even attach you snowflakes as a gift-topper instead of a bow, when you’re giving at Christmas.
