Spring is right around the corner, and we’re kicking off the Easter crafting season with an adorable Easter Chick Napkin Ring craft!  After a long, grey winter, I just LOVE how bright and cheerful these little chicks are!  They’re fun and easy to make, using cardboard rolls and fabric scraps, and they’ll add a pretty pop of colour to your dinner table this Easter season.

An opportunity for a brief lesson about colours and colour-mixing:

To start, the hooligans chose their paint colours.  I talked about pastel colours, and explained how they’re different than primary colours. We went through our paint supply, comparing soft colours to the bright primary ones that the kids usually go in for.

I explained how a pastel colour is simply a lighter version of a primary colour, and how we can actually make pastels by adding white paint to our primary paint colours. They took guesses at how we could make pink, mauve, light blue, pale yellow etc.

Making our napkin rings:

Then the hooligans got busy painting.  They love painting cardboard tubes. We’ve started off so many crafts this way over the years.  They find it easiest to paint their cardboard roll if they slide the roll onto their hand.  That allows them to paint all around the tube without getting their fingers in the painty parts.

While their tubes dried, they selected the craft scraps that they would decorate their chicks with.

To speed up the paint-drying process, I always keep a hair-dryer handy in the craft room.  A quick blast of warm air dries acrylic paint in a jiffy.

With the paint dry, the children glued on their craft scraps, feathers and googly eyes.
