Button Angel Ornament – Happy Hooligans

Have you ever seen the adorable button Christmas tree ornaments we made a couple of years ago in my daycare? The hooligans loved making those ornaments because they adore diving into the button bin, and they love any excuse to use a glue gun.

When I was hanging our button trees on the Christmas tree this year, I realized we could use the same easy technique to make button angel ornaments.
Of course, we would need something round for the angel’s head, something for the wings, and we’d need a halo.
I ventured to the craft cupboard, and found some ribbon for the wings. I knew that would work because we made ribbon wings for our cork angels a few years ago. Then I opened our button bin, and spotted some gold buttons that would make great halos. I dug a little deeper and came up with a couple of large pearl buttons that would make perfect heads for our button angels.
If you don’t have all of those materials, I’ve suggested some alternatives below.
Making button angels is a wonderful activity for every age – kids AND adults. Young children may require help with the gluing, but everyone will enjoy the challenging of finding the perfect buttons to stack in order of size to make their angel ornaments.

If you don’t have gold buttons or pearl buttons:
If you don’t have gold buttons or pearl buttons, you can use a piece of gold pipe cleaner for the halo, and for the head, you could use a small wooden ball,styrofoam ball, jingle bell or even a pom pom. All of those worked well when we made our seashell angel ornaments.
Time needed: 30 minutes
How to Make a Button Angel Ornament
- Select your buttons
Sift through your button collection, and select 6-8 buttons in assorted sizes.
- Order by size
Order your buttons by size, and stack them largest to smallest (without glue) to make sure they’ll stack well and look good.
- Glue buttons
Glue the buttons in order from largest to smallest.
- Add head
Glue the round pearl button to top of the stack of buttons.
- Add wings
Tie some ribbon into a bow and glue it to the back of the stack of buttons.
- Add halo and hanging thread
Thread the gold button with a piece of hanging thread thread, and knot to secure the ends.
