Complete the Couplet
In this activity, students learn that a couplet is two lines of poetry that are linked together by meaning, rhythm, and rhyme, and they’ll practice by completing partially written couplets.

Poem Practice Sheet
This worksheet walks students through the process of planning a couplet poem. Students are asked to choose a topic they want to write about, then brainstorm keywords on the topic. Then, they go through the keywords and try to find rhyming words that would make a good couplet.
We Are Teachers
Write Your Couplet Poem
Using the keywords and rhyming words they generated, students now write their couplet poems on the template provided.
How To Use the Couplet Poetry Worksheets
Support your students as they build their couplet poems one step at a time. First, students will practice rhyming words with a friend. Then, they will choose words, and finally, they will put it all together.
Pair students up to create couplet poems together. First, they brainstorm rhyming words—one student comes up with the first line and the second student completes the couplet with the second line.
Make multiple copies of the couplet poem template and have them available as a free-time activity or literacy station activity.
Once students have created their poems, hold a poetry slam and allow students who want to share their poems perform for the class.
Use the couplet poem activity as a literacy extension for other subjects or events like Earth Day, Women’s History Month, the plant life cycle, after a field trip, etc.
Why Teachers Love the Couplet Poetry Worksheets
Our couplet poetry worksheets are a no-fuss, all-inclusive lesson to engage students in meaningful work. Listening to and creating poetry helps build foundational literacy skills. Learning to hear and manipulate sounds in words builds phonemic awareness. Once students recognize sound patterns, they begin to understand the concepts of word families and spelling patterns. In short, poetry is a fun and engaging way to support reading success.
Why Students Love It
Simply put, poems can be silly, playful, wise, and fun! And everyone knows that when learning feels like a game—through songs, wordplay, and rhyming—students are more invested and engaged. And that’s exactly what we want from our young learners.
