Glittery Kid-Safe Elmer’s Unicorn Slime Recipe

This glittery Unicorn Slime Recipe makes the best homemade slime for sensory play, party favours and loot bags. It’s kid-safe, Borax-free, and it takes just 3 ingredients: Elmer’s Glue, baking soda and contact lens solution! Making slime is a great science activity for kids too!

Slime is fun! Slime is great! Kid-safe slime is easy to make!

That’s right! Today I’m going to show you how to make slime that’s totally safe for your kids to handle. This Elmer’s Glue slime recipe doesn’t contain laundry starch or Borax like other slime recipes do, and it’s so easy to make you’ll wonder why you haven’t made it before!

You have heard of slime, right? It’s that silky-stretchy, rubbery-flubbery concoction that’s taken the craft world by storm this year.

Believe it or not, we had never made slime until recently, when the wonderful folks at Elmer’s offered to send us the ingredients to make their kid-safe, Borax-free slime recipe.

We were super-excited for the opportunity to try it out, and waited eagerly for our parcel to arrive.

When it did, we were delighted to find it chock-full of assorted glue, baking soda, contact lens solution and food colour as well as the instructions for their slime recipe, and we spent an entire morning, experimenting, exploring, and concocting.

We had a BLAST!

Seriously. If you haven’t made slime with your kids yet, you have to!

Slime is the COOLEST stuff ever! It’s science, it’s sensory play, and it’s over-the-top fun!

We’re totally excited to show you the Elmer’s glue slime recipes we made, so let’s get started with our very favourite!

Glittery Unicorn Slime

The best slime of all was this unicorn slime. We made it with Elmer’s Glitter Glue.

Isn’t it gorgeous?

We named this slime unicorn slime because when we twisted a few of the colours together, we thought it looked just like a unicorn’s horn.

This is how you make unicorn slime.

Glittery Unicorn Slime Ingredients:

Your contact lens solution must contain Boric Acid

The activating ingredient in these kid-safe Elmer’s slime recipes is contact lens solution, but you need contact solution that lists boric acid as one of its ingredients.  It’s the boric acid that makes it possible to make slime without using Borax.

How to make unicorn slime: 

Pour 4 oz. of your glitter glue into a bowl. A bottle of Elmer’s Glitter Glue is 6 ounces, so you won’t use quite all of it. We didn’t measure; we just eyeballed it, leaving about a half-inch of glue remaining in the bottom of the bottle.

Next, add the baking soda to the glue, and give it a good stir.

And now, for the magic ingredient – the contact lens solution! Prepare to be amazed!

Add your contact lens solution to the glue and baking soda mixture. Immediately, your glue will start to congeal and turn to slime. Stir the slime ingredients around until most of the contact solution is mixed in, and then get your hands in there and start kneading it.

Too sticky?

The slime may stick to your fingers at first, but you can just give your hands a squirt of contact lens solution, and it will slip right off.

Continue to squish and squeeze your blob of slime until all of the contact solution is worked in.

When your slime reaches the perfect consistency, it will be super-stretchy when you pull it, and it will ooze through your fingers when you hold it still.

It’s so fun to play with!

Our glittery unicorn slime keeps very well, and was in perfect shape after being stored in a resealable bag overnight. That makes it a great slime to give away in loot bags, or just for fun to friends and classmates.

A fun way to present your slime to friends is to package it in colourful, plastic Easter eggs. Just seal the holes in the top and bottom of the eggs with a low-heat glue gun to make the eggs air-tight and to prevent any slime from seeping out.

Unicorn Slime with Elmer’s X-TREME White School Glue

Elmer’s Glue Slime can be made with a variety of their glues. Note: I would not attempt making this slime with homemade glue. I’m afraid you won’t get the results you’re looking for.

Elmer’s X-TREME White School Glue makes a fantastic slime. This glue is thicker than Elmer’s other glues, but the recipe is the same: 4 oz glue, 1/2 tbsp baking soda, 1 tbsp of contact lens solution.

You’ll need to colour your X-TREME slime with liquid watercolours or food colouring. We added our colour to the glue before adding in the baking soda. We used soft shades of pink, purple, yellow and turquoise – all the colours that unicorn dreams are made of.

Elmer’s X-TREME White School Glue makes a super-stretchy, silky slime, which is heavenly to play with. It did go a little watery overnight so it wouldn’t be the slime to put in a loot bag. This slime is best used the same day that you make it, so it’s perfect for playdates and science activities.

And Slime #3:

Unicorn Slime made with Elmer’s White School Glue & Glitter

For our final Elmer’s slime recipe, we used the regular Elmer’s glue that we all know and love. The measurements are the same as the above recipes: 4 oz. glue, 1/2 tbsp baking soda and 1 tbsp contact lens solution.

To colour this slime, we used our liquid watercolours again.

And then we kneaded a generous sprinkling of craft glitter into our slime to make it sparkle. So much soft, stretchy, fun! Like the X-TREME unicorn slime, this Elmer’s white glue slime is best played with the same day you make it.

How DO you play with Elmer’s Glue slime?

Mould it, shape it, stretch it, braid it! Squeeze it tight, and then let go and watch as it slowly morphs back into a soft, squishy pillow of slime. For some extra fun, give the kids cookie cutters and scissors to explore their slime with. Then step back and listen to the squeals and giggles as your kids discover all the wonderful things they can do with it.

Ahhh… Slime.
