Making Paper Flowers for Homemade Greeting Cards
Making simple paper flowers is a great way for preschoolers to practice their scissor skills. The finished flowers can be used for a homemade Mother’s Day card or for a spring art project in preschool.
Scissor Practice – cutting circles and lines
We love making flower crafts here in my daycare, and this one is great for toddlers and preschoolers.
These simple flowers are adorable, and a fun way for kids to practice cutting circles and straight lines when they’re learning how to use scissors.
Cutting circles can be a bit trickier than cutting a straight line, so young children may need some help with this activity.
Tell them not to worry about making a perfect circle. It’s more important that this craft is used as an opportunity to develop their fine motor skills than to make the perfect flower.
Plus the quirky shapes that the flowers take on when they’re cut out by a preschooler is so much more adorable than if the circles were perfectly round.

To make greeting cards with our paper flowers, you’ll need:
Supplies:
- coloured card stock or construction paper for the flowers
- green card stock or construction paper for the stems
- scissors
- glue
- plain piece of card stock for your card
Making your flowers:
Draw some circles on your coloured paper. Your child may be old enough to do this him/herself. If not, you can teach your child how to trace, or you can draw the circles yourself.
You’ll want to cut larger circles for the flowers, and smaller circles for the centre of the flowers.
Have your child cut out all those circles.
To make your stems:
Draw several straight lines on a square of green paper, and have your child cut along those lines.
When all of the stem pieces have been cut out, your child can assemble the flowers by gluing them on to a “greeting card” which you’ll make by folding your plain piece of cards stock in half.
For the gluing part of the project, your child can use a glue stick or a glue bottle, or you can do what we did, and paint the glue on to the pieces with a paint brush.
Pro Tip when Gluing with Toddlers:
We often do this when we’re crafting when crafting with very young children who have trouble managing a glue bottle, or when the bottle is too difficult to squeeze.
Press those pretty flower pieces all in to place, and voila!
