Mesh Hearts Valentines Craft for Kids
Toddlers and preschoolers can practice their sewing skills with this simple mesh hearts sewing activity. It’s a great fine-motor activity, and another cute Valentine’s craft for daycare or preschool.
Here in my home daycare, we love crafting with stuff we already have around the house. It’s great way to keep crafting costs down, and it’s rather fun to search for things that we have in our cupboards and use them for easy crafts and activities that keep the kids here learning new skills and being creative.
This turned out to be a fun, sewing activity for the hooligans as well as a cute little Valentine’s ornament.
The Hooligans enjoyed “sewing” with assorted lengths materials that I had around the house.
Supplies:
- mesh
- plastic sewing needle
- pipe cleaners
- yarn
- strips of pastic cut from a Hawaiian skirt
Other Suggestions:
- string
- shoelaces
- ribbon
- strips cut from a plastic bag
How-To:
To start, I cut some hearts out of some plastic mesh. My husband has a roll of it in the garage, and it comes in handy for projects like this.
Then I threaded a pipe-cleaner around the edges and twisted the ends in place.
Then the hooligans “sewed” their heart with the yarn and lengths of plastic.
Sewing or lacing is a great activity to help strengthen fine motor skills.
Providing an assortment of materials for your children to sew with adds visual interest and texture to the project.
When we were finished, I tied a piece of yarn to the top of each heart so they could be hung in a window or on a door knob.
