Painted Clay Dough Easter Egg Ornaments

With our easy 3-ingredient recipe, kids can make these Painted Clay Dough Easter Egg Ornaments to hang on an Easter tree, to give as gifts, or to simply display in your home this Easter.

I’m so excited to share our final Easter craft of the season with you. Toddlers, preschoolers, tweens and teens alike will love it.

We’ve used our favourite white clay dough recipe, egg-shaped cookie cutters and acrylic craft paint to make hand-painted Easter egg ornaments.

The results were gorgeous!

Great for an Easter Tree

If your kids decorate an Easter tree every year, these are great homemade ornaments to make for it. If you don’t have an Easter tree, you can simply put a few branches into a vase like they did over at Skip to My Lou, and hang your painted eggs from those.

I came up with the idea for these clay dough eggs last week after the kids painted these plastic dollar store Easter eggs with acrylics. They had so much fun designing and decorating them that I got thinking about what else we could paint that would provide a similar experience.

Why not try painting clay dough eggs?

The kids love making clay dough ornaments, BUT, we’d never painted clay dough before (we usually just glitter our clay dough ornaments), so I wasn’t 100% sure if it would work. I was a little worried that the paint might make the dough soggy, but I figured we could give it a try and if that happened we’d just default to plan B and glitter our eggs instead.

As you can see everything worked out fine. More than fine, actually. I was blown away by how beautifully our eggs turned out.

Edited to add: We’ve since experimented with watercolours and clay dough, and oh my goodness, you’re going to want to try that too! Check out our vibrant clay dough butterflies here.

Make your ornaments a day in advance

You do need to make these ornaments a day ahead because the shapes need to dry overnight before you can paint them.
