Painted Plastic Egg Christmas Ornaments
Turn plastic dollar store Easter eggs into beautiful Christmas tree ornaments! Fun and easy process for kids, teens and adults. Hang them on your own tree, or give them as gift toppers this Christmas!
A few years ago, my mom gave me a set of gorgeous European Easter eggs to hang on my Christmas tree (see image below). She’d purchased them while on holiday, and thought they’d make lovely Christmas tree ornaments.
They’re beautiful, and I love them, and I’ve always thought it would be fun to replicate them as a Christmas craft with my daycare hooligans.

Last year, we experimented at Easter, and made these painted Easter eggs using dollar store plastic eggs. Because the process for painting them worked so beautiful, last week, we finally made our own ornately decorated Christmas eggs with glitter and ribbons and all.
Glitter is optional
This process is super-easy, and really fun as it allows you to get as creative as you like with your colours and designs. And of course, if you’re not a fan of glitter, you don’t have to use it. Our un-glittered eggs look beautiful just as they are.
Primer, acrylic paint and craft varnish
Priming your eggs and using acrylic craft paint and craft varnish is not optional, however. Well, not if you want your eggs to last, that is. Using Gesso (or a similar surface prep) is a must in order for your paint to adhere to the egg. A coat of craft varnish/sealer is also recommended to protect your paint from chipping or scratching. The varnish will also add a nice sheen to your project and really make your colours pop too!

How to Transform Plastic Easter Eggs into Ornate Christmas Ornaments

Supplies:
- Plastic Eggs
- Gesso Primer
- Acrylic Craft Paint
- Paintbrushes
- Glitter (optional)
- Wooden Skewer (optional – makes painting easier)
- White Glue (if using glitter)
- Ribbon
- Glue Gun
Instructions:
Painted Easter Egg Christmas Ornaments
- Prime Egg
If you have a wooden skewer, push it into one of the holes in the bottom of the egg. This makes it easy to hold your paint while painting it.
Brush a coat of Gesso all over your egg and let dry.
- Paint Egg
Paint your egg with two coats of acrylic craft paint letting the paint dry in between coats. Allow to dry before adding detail to egg.
- Add Detail
With a fine liner brush, add the decorative details to your egg: swirls, stripes, dots etc. TIP: The end of the paintbrush handle is great for making dots with.
- Add Ribbons
Tie a ribbon into a bow and glue to the bottom of the egg with a hot glue gun.
Loop a piece of ribbon and glue to the top of the egg for hanging.
Hang your ornaments on the Christmas tree or add them as gift toppers on the gifts you’re giving this Christmas.
