Paper Plate Donut Craft for Kids

“D” is for donuts! Make a paper plate donut craft, complete with colourful icing and sprinkles on top!  It’s a cute and easy Letter D craft for toddlers and preschoolers.

Ok, this is just a sweet and simple paper plate craft that we made recently for the letter “D”.  As you may know, we’ve been working for months, on an A-Z collection of paper plate crafts here in my daycare. Today, we checked off the letter “D” with this fun paper plate donut craft.

Our donut was quick and easy to create, and to make things a little more realistic and interesting, we topped our donut with coloured “sprinkles”.

Isn’t it cute?

Let me show you how we made it!

To make our paper plate donut craft, you’ll need:

  • paper plate
  • acrylic craft paint (light brown for the donut, your choice for the icing) (affiliate)
  • coloured rice “sprinkles” (recipe here)
  • scissors
  • paintbrush
  • glue

This is actually the second yummy looking paper plate craft we’ve made recently.  Check out our paper plate ice cream craft!  The process we used to make that one, was VERY cool!

To make our paper plate donuts, I first asked the hooligans what we should do to make our plate look like a donut. “Cut a hole” was the unanimous response.  And so, we cut out the center of the paper plate to make our donut’s hole.

Then we brushed a coat of light brown paint all over the plate giving it a very donut-ish colour.

We let the brown paint dry in the sun for a few moments, and then we topped it with a layer of pink paint – strawberry icing of course!

Your kids can get creative here, thinking up different “flavours” of icing to paint on their donuts.  A very dark brown would be great for chocolate lovers.  Bright blue, green or purple would look super-yummy too!

When our icing colour was dry, we topped our donuts with some “sprinkles”.

Our sprinkles are actually grains of white rice that we had dyed ourselves.

We use our dyed rice for all kinds of sensory activities, and it comes in handy for decorating crafts like this one!  You can see my easy tutorial for dying rice here.

A generous handful of sprinkles glued all over the top of your paper plate donut is a perfect finishing touch!
