Paper Plate Watermelon Craft for PreschoolA paper plate cut in half is the perfect shape for watermelon craft. You Paint the rim of the plate green and the inside pink or red, and voila…. a watermelon slice.

Because the project is so simple, I decided to add a sensory element to the craft so we used coffee beans as watermelon seeds. They add interest and texture to the project and they smell so good.

Don’t they look like real watermelon seeds?

For our paper plate watermelon craft, you’ll need:

  • paper plate
  • red or pink paint
  • green paint
  • paintbrush
  • scissors
  • glue
  • coffee beans

The Process:

Begin by cutting your paper plates in half.  Have your child do the cutting if he or she is old enough to manipulate a pair of scissors.  You may want to draw a line across the middle of the paper plate for your child to follow.

Before you get started, chat with your child about what a watermelon looks like when it’s sliced open. Introduce new words as you describe the fruit’s appearance with your child: the green rind, the pink or red flesh of the fruit, and the seeds.  You can even talk about how each seed inside a watermelon can be planted to grow a new watermelon.  Better yet, if you have a real watermelon on hand, slice it open, and examine it with your child.  Enjoy a slice before you get down to crafting!

Provide your child with some red and green paint. If you have several shades of green and red paint, pour a bit of each into your paint pallet. That way, your child can experiment with blending different shades of paint together.

Have your child paint the outer rim of the paper plate green, and the inner part of the plate red or pink.

Then, your child can glue the coffee bean “seeds” in place in the red area.
