Patriotic Canada Day Windsock Craft for Kids

Here’s a fun and easy Canada Day Craft for toddlers and preschoolers. We turned Pringles cans into patriotic windsocks and hung them from a branch in our backyard. They look so cheery and festive fluttering in the breeze.

Canada Day is always fun and festive. There’s the parade, the fireworks, and the backyard BBQ’s with friends and family.

Whether you’re gathering with friends and neighbours, or celebrating at home with your family, a patriotic craft is just the thing to keep the kids entertained in between the parade, the BBQ and the fireworks.

This windsock is easy, requires very few supplies, and it’s a great activity for kids of all ages.

How to Make our Canada Day Windsock:

  • Pringles Cans
  • Sharp serrated knife
  • red and white acrylic craft paint
  • red and white ribbons
  • scissors
  • paint brushes
  • hole punch

If you don’t have Pringles cans:

We made our windsocks with Pringles cans, because we’ve used them before to make windsocks, and they work well. If you don’t have Pringles cans, don’t worry. You can improvise with take-out coffee cups, or styrofoam cups.

How to make your windsock:

Before you begin, “saw” your Pringles cans in half with a serrated knife.

Then give your cans a coat or two of white paint to cover up the Pringles label.

Acrylic craft paint dries quickly, so if you’re crafting outside in the breeze and the sunshine, it will be dry in no time.  If you’re inside and need to speed up the process, give the paint a blast with a hair dryer.

When the white paint is dry, have the kids use the red paint to decorate the cans.

The hooligans had a ton of fun with this step, and everyone made their own unique designs.

Some painted stripes, hearts and maple leafs, and a couple of the kids made red handprints on their windsocks. A few  of the children added “150” to their cans because Canada is celebrating its 150th anniversary of confederation this year.

When the cans are dry, use a hole punch to make several holes about an inch up from the bottom edge of the can.

Thread long lengths of red and white ribbon through, and knot them in place.

To finish, poke a couple of holes in the top of the can, and thread a ribbon through for hanging.
