recycled painting – happy hooligans

recycled painting before and afterOk, so you may have heard that we’re on a mission to add some colours to the wall in our playroom.  Earlier this week, the hooligans made box lid art , and last week we melted crayon shavings to make our stunning rendition of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”, and today, I’m sharing a very cool recycled painting project with you!  We took an inexpensive and not-so-attractive second hand store purchase, and gave it an awesome makeover!recycled painting cover photorecycled painting cover photo

This is such an affordable way to put some art on your playroom walls, while at the same time showcasing your child’s artwork!

Supplies:

All you need is a hideous or out-dated piece of art.  If you don’t already own one, hit the thrift shops.  You’ll have no problem finding something that’s perfect!  A couple of months ago, when I was cruising through Value Village I happened upon this little gem.  abstract art on canvasabstract art on canvas

It was priced at $5.99.  Jackpot!!  A little high perhaps, but it wasn’t the painting I was thinking about.  It was what we could DO with it!

How to Turn a Thrift Shop Canvas into New Art

The other day I rolled a coat of primer over the whole thing, and today I presented the fresh canvas to the hooligans!  This would be our first collaborative art project for the playroom!blue paint and paintbrush in front of primed canvasblue paint and paintbrush in front of primed canvas

I got out the tempera paints (another thrift shop find), and mixed up a couple of greens and a blue and the hooligans rolled those colours all over the canvas.toddlers rolling green paint on canvastoddlers rolling green paint on canvas

Looks better already doesn’t it?canvas blue and green base coatcanvas blue and green base coat

Then the hooligans grabbed some brushes and those same colours and started painting whatever their little hearts desired.toddlers painting blue circles on green canvastoddlers painting blue circles on green canvasclose up child's paintbrush with blue tempura paintclose up child's paintbrush with blue tempura paint

We let those colours dry while we had snack, and then they added a little red and orange.group painting done by toddlersgroup painting done by toddlers
And a splash of yellow.overview toddler painting done on recycled canvasoverview toddler painting done on recycled canvas

And then our afternoon hooligan put the finishing touches on the masterpiece when she arrived.toddler adding the finishing touches to our recycled paintingtoddler adding the finishing touches to our recycled painting

And THIS is what we now have hanging on the wall above the colouring table in the playroom!finished group toddler paintingfinished group toddler painting

An absolutely one-of-a-kind, hooligan-made work of art!  I think it’s fantastic!  Stay tuned… we’ll be making another recycled painting soon!
