Ribbon Heart Valentines Cards – Happy Hooligans
Ribbon Heart Valentines Cards: Here’s a really cute Valentines craft for toddlers and preschoolers, and a great way to use some of the ribbon scraps you’ve been hanging onto.
The hooligans and I were digging around in the craft cupboards yesterday, looking for stuff to make more Valentine’s cards with, when I came across the ribbon basket.
My ribbon basket is literally overflowing with full rolls, partial rolls and a bazillion strips of ribbon in various lengths. I have a hard time parting with leftover bits of ribbon because they’re so pretty and we always find a way to use them when we’re crafting.
Today’s ribbon heart cards were the perfect way to use up some of them.
The hooligans love exploring materials and textiles because of the colours, patterns and textures.
The ribbons we used today were lovely for little hands to explore. Some ribbons were slippery and smooth, others had a lovely gauzy texture, and the rick-rack that you see at the bottom of our heart was thick and bumpy.
The one thing that all of our ribbon strips had in common was their colour: pink!
To make your Ribbon Heart Valentine’s Cards you’ll need:

Making your cards:
Start by folding your 8 x 11 piece of card stock in half. This will be your actual card.
Cut strips of ribbon that are not quite as wide as your card.
Have your child glue the ribbon strips across the front of the card. A paintbrush and a small pot of glue is a great way for toddlers to handle glue if the glue bottle is too difficult to squeeze.
While your child is decorating the front of the card, you can cut out the heart-shaped overlay. For this you’ll need a half piece of 8 x 11 card stock. Make sure it’s exactly the same size as the front of the card your child is working on.
You’re going to cut a heart out of this piece of paper. To do this, I simply drew a rough sketch of a heart on the paper, poked my scissors through the middle of it, and cut it out.
When all of the ribbons have been glued to the card, have your child apply glue to the back of your heart-shaped overlay. Next, carefully position the overlay over the ribbons, lining up the edges of the overlay with the edges of the card.
